Dr. David Fetterman selected for IAOTP’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. David Fetterman is the President and CEO of Fetterman & Associates, an international evaluation consulting firm and a former faculty member and administrator at Stanford University. He was recently chosen to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for 2021 given by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).

Dr. David Fetterman is the President and CEO of Fetterman & Associates, an international evaluation consulting firm and a former faculty member and administrator at Stanford University. He was recently chosen to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for 2021 given by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members are chosen for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. These special honorees are distinguished based on their longevity in their fields, their contributions they have made to society and the impact they have had on their industries and professions. Dr. Fetterman will be honored for this distinction at IAOTP’s 2021 Annual Awards Gala being held at the Plaza Hotel in NYC this December. Dr. Fetterman is being recognized as a Lifetime Achievement Awardee for dedicating more than four decades of his life’s work as an established and trusted Anthropologist, Educational Leader, and Evaluator. He has consistently demonstrated success in every role he has achieved over the entire course of his extraordinary career.  Dr. Fetterman served as a faculty member and administrator for Stanford University for over 25 years.  He is also the past president of the American Evaluation Association, the Author and Editor of 17 books including Empowerment Evaluation:  Knowledge and Tools for Self-assessment, Evaluation Capacity Building, and Accountability and Ethnography: Step by Step. He is the founder of Empowerment Evaluation (a self-assessment approach used in 17 countries).

Throughout his academic career, his roles have included Professor & Research Director for the California Institute of Integral Studies, Senior Researcher at RMC Research and Principal Research Scientist at the American Institute for Research. Dr. Fetterman was a faculty member in the School of Business and Leadership at the University of Charleston and served as a Visiting Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at San Jose State University. He also served as Director of Evaluation for the School of Medicine at Stanford University, Director of the Master’s Program in Policy Analysis and Evaluation in the School of Education at Stanford University, and Consulting Professor in the School of Education at Stanford University.

His key areas of expertise are in higher education, medical education, environmental health and safety, programs for dropouts and gifted children, empowerment evaluation, and organizational learning and development. Dr. Fetterman received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Anthropology and Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Connecticut where he graduated summa cum laude, his two Master’s degrees, in Education and Anthropology, from Stanford University, and his Ph.D. in Medical and Educational Anthropology from Stanford University.

In his role at Fetterman & Associates Dr. Fetterman, conducts domestic and international evaluations. He is involved with projects that range from a $15 million Hewlett-Packard Digital Village project to small townships in South Africa.  He has also provided evaluation consultation services for Google, the WK Kellogg Foundation, tobacco prevention projects in the state of Arkansas, Knight Foundation programs for journalists, and entrepreneurship programs for at-risk students in the United States.  He is currently engaged in developing education standards in China and eliminating tuberculosis in India.

Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Fetterman has received numerous awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.  This year he will be considered for an exclusive interview on TIP Radio and to be broadcast on the famous Reuters building in Times Square, NYC. In 2019 he was featured in TIP (Top Industry Professional) Magazine. He received both the Paul Lazarsfeld Award for Outstanding Contributions to Evaluation Theory and the Myrdal Award for Cumulative Contributions to Evaluation Practice – The American Evaluation Association’s highest honors. Dr. Fetterman has also been recognized by Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement. Dr. Fetterman is the past president of the American Evaluation Association and the American Anthropological Association’s Council on Anthropology and Education.

In addition to his successful career, Dr. Fetterman has conducted evaluation projects throughout the world including: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.  He is a published author and editor of 17 books including Collaborative, Participatory, and Empowerment Evaluation:  Stakeholder Involvement Approaches; Empowerment Evaluation:  Knowledge and Tools for Self-assessment, Evaluation Capacity Building, and Accountability; Empowerment Evaluation Principles in Practice; Ethnography: Step by Step (4th edition); and Excellence and Equality: A Qualitatively Different Perspective on Gifted and Talented Education.  He has contributed to a variety of encyclopedias, including the International Encyclopedia of Education, the Encyclopedia of Human Intelligence, the Encyclopedia of Evaluation, and the Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods.

Looking back, Dr. Fetterman attributes much of his success to his education, mentors he has had the pleasure of working alongside and staying passionate in all his endeavors.  He says he is optimistic.  In spite of the gravity of the problems we face today, he has found people of good will around the globe ready to tackle the world’s most pressing problems and he is honored to be a part of that effort. In his spare time, he has enjoyed traveling including trekking to Mt. Everest Base Camp with his family and hopes to continue after COVID. For the future, he hopes to continue to be a life-long student of human behavior and continue to make a difference in people’s lives.
