Los Angeles, CA (PRUnderground) October 6th, 2020

Modest Proposal and New Degree Press announces the release of Ryan McKee’s, “Modest Proposal Anthology: Interviews with Top Comedians Right Before Comedy Went Viral & Other Stuff”Available now in paperback and for download on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Rakuten, and other international sites.

Like a comedic time capsule buried in an era before the emergence of YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, podcasts, and Netflix Comedy Specials, “Modest Proposal Anthology” captures stand-up comedy the way it was right before a well-timed tweet could take a joke viral.

More than 18 years in the making, the book reads like one part Judd Apatow’s “Sick in the Head: Conversations About Life and Comedy”, one part McSweeney’s collection, and one part Mad magazine, featuring:

  • Original interviews with more than 40 comedians, writers, and directors from 2003-2006, along with updates from the subjects in 2020, including Dave Chappelle, Amy Sedaris, Marc Maron, Maria Bamford, Bob Odenkirk, Jim Gaffigan, David Cross, Patton Oswalt, and Sean Anders.

  • Never-before-printed interviews and updated quotes from some of today’s greatest comedy writers and comedians.

  • Behind-the-curtain glimpses at a side of stand up comedy culture you don’t see on stage or screen.

“Modest Proposal Anthology” is essential reading for any comedy geek, pop culture fanatic, and humor aficionado. And unless you‘re one of the few hundred readers who subscribed to the print magazine in 2003, you won’t find this material anywhere else.

“Modest Proposal Anthology” is an Amazon Best Seller and has a 5-star rating on Amazon.com. Here’s what some people are saying:

“I will say this with one hundred percent sincerity-Ron and Ryan and Modest Proposal are literally the only decent things to come out of Phoenix Arizona ever. Ever.”
— Kyle Kinane, comedian Trampoline in a Ditch and Whiskey Icarus

“For a few brief, shining years — after the original club boom went bust and before social media turned success into a popularity contest — comedy was all about the craft. This anthology captures that era when joke-writing was reborn and those who covered it actually cared about the art form. Who knows, with a shred of business insight Modest Proposal might have been successful?”
— Julie Seabaugh, author Ringside at Roast Battle: The First Five Years of L.A.’s Fight Club for Comedians

These pages are filled with depraved rantings from drunks, druggies and degenerates- some of the greatest comics of our time. You need this brilliant filth in your life.”
— Mishka Shubaly, best-selling author The Long Run and I Swear I’ll Make It Up To You

The anthology features brand-new as well as classic interviews with: Dave Chappelle, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Sedaris, Marc Maron, Maria Bamford, Jim Gaffigan, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, Chelsea Peretti, Jim Breuer, Paul F. Tompkins, Beth Lisick, Doug Stanhope, Anthony Jeselnik, Jonah Ray, Chris Hardwick, Dave Attell, Eugene Mirman, Kulap Vilaysack, Greg Fizsimmons, Jesse Thorn, Sean Anders, Henry Phillips, James Kochalcka, Jeffrey Brown, and more.

About the Editor:
Like other visionaries you never read about, Ryan McKee lived between the edge of oblivion and the cusp of the next big thing. In 2003, he launched an alt comedy magazine, just before a new comedy boom and just as print magazines were going bust. He pivoted his efforts and brought his career back from the brink. Soon, he turned his passion for writing about comedians into opportunities to work alongside them with staff jobs at MTV.com and “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” Ryan later wrote and created “James Corden’s Next James Corden,” which went on to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series in 2018.
