Nerd Games – a Sydney based board game development studio that sets out to educate, entertain and encourage has today announced their latest game. Called “Climate Crisis”, it is a collaborative game meant for 4 to 6 players and looks at the climate change problems facing the world today.

The company saw the need for a game that helped educate people about the severity of climate change in today’s ecological situation as humanity faces a global heatwave that threatens to destroy much of our planet’s ecosystem. The brand’s goal is to have copies of Climate Crisis available at every high school – to entertain, encourage and educate every kid about climate change and get them thinking about possible solutions.

“Without a doubt the only way we are going to solve our climate crisis is by working together,” said Phil Hopper, lead designer at Nerd Games. “That starts local even if it is a bunch of kids sitting around a table – awareness leads to understanding, understanding leads to action!”

In 2019, during the bushfire crisis enveloping the east coast of Australia, the company set out to create a highly entertaining board game that addressed these issues and delivered it to players in an understandable, factual and importantly impactful way. The process started as a pet project, but has grown to undergo multiple rounds of testing and the team is currently preparing to start an environmentally-friendly production of the game itself. Launching on Kickstarter, the campaign will be used to create enough copies of the game so that Nerd Games can get this message across in a memorable way.

The premise of the game surrounds a team of people in the year 2020 who are facing a threat of humanity’s making – climate change – which has the power to devastate the world. Players must band together and find scientists to work on the ultimate technological solution to solve our climate change problems and save the planet. The game contains a tricky balance between moving to and maintaining renewable energy, managing recycling and an ever-growing population, keeping alive and achieving environmental sustainability. Players must traverse the impacts of climate change and coordinate their abilities to devise strategies to solve the crisis.

The game will have no plastic pieces, use non-toxic vegetable dyes, and be composed of recyclable materials. The team at Nerd Games intends to take back any pre-loved games that need a new home and ensure that they are reused or donated to schools.

“It may be a lofty goal but if we can get even a hundred schools playing this game then we will have made a difference.” said Hopper.

Climate Crisis will launch on Kickstarter on the 11th of August at 8am AEST. For more information, visit the game’s Kickstarter page here to be notified on launch.
