Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) in Ponce, Puerto Rico will award 14 scholarships to students who are accepted into the January ‘18 intake of its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. The scholarships will pay for 50% of the tuition fees for the entire accelerated three year program, which is the first of its kind in Puerto Rico.

“Our BSN scholarship program aims to support Puerto Rico’s next generation of nurses,” says David Lenihan, CEO and President of PHSU. “We’re committed to helping the island recover as quickly as possible from the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria by making our excellent program more accessible for students who aspire to, and are passionate about, careers in nursing.”

Seven of PHSU’s BSN scholarships will be merit based, and will be awarded to enrolled students who have demonstrated exceptional academic accomplishments in their undergraduate studies. The other seven scholarships will be need based, and will be awarded to enrolled students who have demonstrated financial need.

Educational benefits to PHSU’s nursing students will include opportunities to:

  • leverage established relationships with local hospitals
  • gain exclusive exposure to the school’s research projects
  • achieve mentorship experience from practicing professionals within the Ponce Health Sciences University Wellness Center

“While most BSN degrees require four years for completion, our academic team has designed the first rigorous program in Puerto Rico to enable our students to complete their studies within three years,” says Lenihan. “Our highly qualified BSN graduates will have the choice of working in Puerto Rico, which would support the health needs of island residents and benefit the local economy, or to seek nursing opportunities in the United States and other territories.”

Applications for PHSU’s BSN program are due by January 2, 2018. Classes will begin on January 15, and the program will be taught in English.
