It’s official… Ultra inexpensive cherries imported from other countries including China, Poland and Turkey offers a challenge to Michigan-based Traverse Bay Farms. The company offers a number of nationally award-winning cherry-based products including its cherry barbecue sauce, cherry poppyseed salad dressing and cherry salsa. Each has received a national award from the largest and most competitive food competition in America. In addition to offering cherry-based gourmet food products, Traverse Bay Farms,  has a number of other products made with as much local produce as possible including:

According to Andy LaPointe, Director of Marketing, with Traverse Bay Farms, “Since starting in 2001, our mission is to provide all-natural fruit-based health products and great tasting products that our customers can enjoy with every meal of the day. And we’re striving toward that mission every day. We have the Michigan Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate for natural relief for arthritis pain and the tart cherry capsules. And that’s why we also have dried cherries our customers can enjoy in their breakfast oatmeal. Our cherry poppyseed dressing can be enjoyed on a salad during lunch. Our cherry or red raspberry salsa, can be enjoyed with tortilla chips or a Mexican meal.”

Accorded to published reports from US government international trade agencies and/or industry trade journals, the Turkish government, for example, heavily subsidizes its cherry industry. This means they can ship their cherries across the oceans and still under local cherry farmers and cherry companies, like Traverse Bay Farms. However, unlike the USA, other countries may not have as stringent growing, production and shipping practices. This may mean lower quality products for the end consumer.

Mr. LaPointe continued, “The way we are fighting these unfair trade practices is to let our customers know where know where our cherries come from. We can walk right down the right and see the cherries harvested from the trees. Those same cherries are sold in our two retail stores. We have a treasure in our location of being in the heart of Northern Michigan cherry country.”
