Music Biz Pros & Broadway Stars Hired to Lead Classes

NY (PRUnderground) May 11th, 2020

An alumnus of the PBS-TV entertainment series, My Music, is bringing together Broadway stars and music industry professionals with up and coming performers, to get aspiring artists ready for the stage, by way of internet video conferencing via Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Longtime professional vocal coach Betsy Lawrence, who served as a backing singer and contractor for public television’s most successful oldies series (launched and produced by host, TJ Lubinsky), is the founder of Pittsburgh Music Masters – a platform for music students to receive individualized and group training from  A-list college faculty, industry insiders and Grammy-nominated Broadway stars.

With the Coronavirus pandemic forcing many entertainment venues and outlets across the country (including Broadway) to close down until further notice, Ms. Lawrence, who also directs Carnegie-Mellon University’s jazz choir as well as serve as an artist lecturer in operatic studies at the institution, is expanding the offering of workshops and masterclasses within Pittsburgh Music Masters via live, online instruction given by music industry heavyweights. The purpose of expanding the classes is to offer employment for stage and voice professionals who may be out of work at the moment, no thanks to the pandemic.

Andy Einhorn, a Grammy-nominated Broadway conductor/music director who worked with veterans such as Audra McDonald and Bette Midler, is slated to teach a masterclass on Monday, May18th. Composer David Dabbon whose work was featured in “Beetlejuice” will lead weekly songwriting workshop classes with songwriter/Treeland Recording studio owner Dave Hidek, starting on Tuesday, May 19th. From Broadway’s “Kinky Boots,” Patricia Phillips is scheduled to teach a voice masterclass on Monday, June 8th.

Ms. Lawrence’s goals for Pittsburgh Music Masters are in her own words, “to give students access to distinguished collegiate music faculty, outstanding industry insiders, and acclaimed Broadway veterans….to collaborate with the faculty, as well as guest artists, through individualized and group training and receive invaluable feedback along the way. Each workshop and masterclass is a unique and a one-of-a-kind experience.”
