American Sentinel University Receives National Grant to Assist Nurse Educators

Grant Helps Nurse Educators Committed to Educating the Next Generation of Nurses

American Sentinel University was awarded a $1 million grant to provide loans to doctoral and master’s nursing education students who are committed to educating the next generation of nurses.
The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) grant was awarded in June 2019 by the U.S. Public Health Service, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and marks the third time American Sentinel has received this grant for its DNP, Educational Leadership and MSN, Nursing Education programs.
“We are pleased to offer these loans to our students,” says Mary Adams, president at American Sentinel University. “We know this will help remove some of the financial obstacles that many students face when making the decision to return to school to earn an advanced nurse educator degree.”
The NFLP grant provides loans to graduate and doctoral nursing education students with the intent to serve as full-time faculty at an accredited school of nursing to address the nursing educator shortage. It allows the university to offer loans for tuition, books, and fees at a low interest rate with partial loan forgiveness to borrowers who complete their program of study and then serve as a full-time nursing faculty for a consecutive four-year period.
Students who receive the NFLP loan may have up to 85 percent of their loan forgiven in return for serving full-time as faculty at an accredited school of nursing in the U.S.
“This grant will help address the nation’s shortage of nurse educators,” said Elaine Foster, dean of nursing and healthcare programs at American Sentinel University. “Earning an MSN or DNP specializing in nursing education will put you on a path for a career in nursing education and is an essential way you can impact healthcare in this country.”
To qualify for the program, students must be accepted or enrolled in either the DNP, Educational Leadership or MSN, Nursing Education programs.
Once a student is accepted into the program, they must maintain good academic standing to continue to receive NFLP loan funds until graduation. The service requirements for loan forgiveness begin during the first twelve months after completion of the degree.
