Andrew Chong UIUC, a young musician with humanity at heart

Andrew Chong UIUC student is a humanitarian, musician, and a passionate tennis player. He has been involved in humanitarian work and volunteered in many NGOs to lend assistance whenever possible. Andrew had joined AMASE (Academy of Music and Arts for Special Education) to expand on his interest in music as well as volunteer for other students. He taught cello to teenagers, counseled, and assisted them with their public performances. Throughout the journey, he made long-lasting relationships with most of his students. Later he attended The King’s Academy, which motivated him to delve deeper into humanitarian work.

Even today, Andrew Chong UIUC student actively engages in many social activities. He continues his community services through the King’s Academy that holds yearly service tours to Tecate, Mexico, in an attempt to help the local community. He is one of the volunteers sent by the Academy during its annual tour to Mexico and has assisted many struggling communities, in building and fixing houses for distressed communities. To date, he has received many rewards for his community services.

Andrew Chong UIUC has also participated in many musical events and won multiple awards. He was even offered a scholarship from Hye-Reong Kim Memorial Foundation for his previous community service in addition to the Missy Belton Scholarship from The King’s Academy as the most outstanding musician of his class.  

Andrew Chong UIUC student first picked up, his now long and faithful companion — the cello, in China. He understands the significance of music in life, especially during the adversities. He believes that when we listen to a song, our breathing increases and becomes deeper, consequently producing more serotonin, a hormone essential for a positive outlook. According to him, music has many benefits:

1.     enhancing our memory retention

2.     increasing our immunity while working out 

3.     effective stress management tool 

4.     relaxing effect 

Andrew Chong UIUC Being a cello player has helped him to survive a monotonous routine by providing a fresh outlook on life. He strongly believes that music enriches one’s entire personality. 

Andrew Chong UIUC student had developed an interest in sports back in the 3rd grade when his family moved to Shanghai and has been pursuing it as a career and a hobby ever since. He has participated in many tournaments, both in Shanghai and later in the U.S. He attended the Stanford Nike Tennis Camp as well as his high school tennis team throughout his studies. Later on, in college, he joined the UIUC’s Club Tennis Team.

The problem-solving aspect was what he liked the most about the sport. Andrew Chong UIUC saw an opportunity for self-expression in tennis, and it left a profound impact on his life, shaping his core ideals. He firmly believes in a philosophy that considers mental fortitude and perseverance as the greatest values and lives by it. According to Andrew Chong UIUC, defeat is always more productive than victory, as it forces you to evaluate yourself and improve as a result.
