Australia & United Kingdom – the Most Popular Countries for Veganism Says Chef’s Pencil Report

Industry: Food & Drink

Chef's Pencil used Google Trends data to compile a list with the countries and cities that had the highest interest level in veganism in 2018.

Sydney, Australia (PRUnderground) February 7th, 2019

Chef’s Pencil has analyzed the rise of veganism through the lens of Google Trends, a reliable big data provider. Google Trends lets you analyze the interest level of search categories around the world such as veganism, which comprises vegan-related searches made in any language (e.g. “vegan restaurants near me”, “vegane rezepte”, “vegan essen”, “vegan food”).

While some of these searches are made out of curiosity, a high volume of vegan-related searches, such as vegan recipes or vegan restaurants near me, show a clear adoption or intent to adopt a vegan lifestyle.  Vegan-related searches were at record levels last year, up 11% from 2017, and 35% from 2016.

Google assigns a score for each location (broken down by country and city) that shows the interest level of a given topic by comparing searches made for that topic to all Google searches made in that particular location.

For example, if Google assigns a 100 score to Australia for veganism searches and a 78 score for the United States, it means that the percentage of Aussies who searched for veganism is much higher than the percentage of Americans searching for the same topic.

According to Google Trends, the interest level around the world for all things vegan – restaurants, recipes, dog food – was highest in Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Sweden and Canada.

Israel came in 6th, followed by the United States, Ireland, Austria and Germany.

Chef’s Pencil also found the 20 cities worldwide which had the most vegan-related search traffic in proportion to their total searches, using Google’s search ranking system of 0-100.

Bristol, Portland, Edinburgh, Vancouver, and Seattle ranked first. The United States and the United Kingdom were both represented by 6 cities in the top 20, Australia by 3 cities and Sweden by two.
