A self- published author at age 7, DaVae Holloway wants to make coloring a fun experience for everyone. Just in time for back to school, she launches her first bilingual coloring book, Baking with DaVae (Horneando Con DaVae). The first of many multilingual books to come, this book features an English and Spanish storyline, 24 single-sided coloring pages with a bakery theme. Each hand-drawn page is produced from photographs of DaVae, best friend Heaven, and brothers Robert and David. It will take you on a journey through a day in the life of this young African American author, as they bake her favorite treats.
DaVae, now in second grade, was attending a Spanish Immersion school, in Minnetonka, MN. While writing her storyline, she was excited to unexpectedly incorporate the participation of her 1st grade class and their teacher. She brought an English draft of her book to class, planning to ask for her teacher’s assistance with writing the Spanish portion. To her surprise, the classroom turned the writing of the Spanish storyline into a group project.
“This made writing the book so much fun. I want to make a lot of books in other languages too, but I really wanted my first book to be in English and Spanish.” DaVae states.
Living in the Minneapolis/ St. Paul metro, it wasn’t easy for DaVae, as most children her age, to understand the unfortunate events of 2020. Her mother explains, “DaVae is very intuitive with a great deal of compassion for others. Having friends of various nationalities, it was hard for her to make sense of the racial tension leading to social and civic unrest within our community.” Bursting with creativity, she decided to let the “grown-ups” deal with world issues and started coloring her own reality. She enjoyed watching her artwork come to life and bring smiles to those around her. She decided to spread the joy around. A natural born teacher, she feels her coloring book, Baking with DaVae, will help other children become creative too; all while learning some of their favorite snacks in Spanish.
This young author may be on to something. Coloring has been proven to enhance a child’s concentration, improve fine motor skills, and nurture creativity. It has also been known to be relaxing and reduce anxiety, a very timely release for children right now.
