Bin There Dump That Reports Encourage Jacksonville Residents to Practice Responsible Recycling

Jacksonville and Other North Florida residents are Putting Trash Items in Their Recycling Bins.

Jacksonville, FL (PRUnderground) June 27th, 2019

Residents of Jacksonville may be getting a little too eager about recycling. They’re putting trash and other dangerous items into their recycling bins. Whenever North Floridians recycle, the materials end up a the same recycling plant, the Imeson Road plant in Jacksonville.

More than a quarter of the material that comes into the plant each day is trash, not recyclables. That’s more than 90 tons of trash each day. Plastic bags are not recyclable at the Jacksonville recycling plant. Neither are items like diapers, batteries, or appliances.

“We’ve seen knives, we’ve seen weapons of sorts. You name it, we’ve seen it,” says General Manager Bill Brinkley of Republic Services, “The grocery bags and the loose plastic that fits around cases of water bottles – that type of loose plastic, it really clogs up our machinery here and shuts us down.”

The time and work put into sorting the garbage out cuts into the profits from the recycling program. Republic is working with the city of Jacksonville on how to address the added costs. Taxpayers may be expected to foot the bill.

Residents may feel they’re doing the right thing by putting an item in the recycle bin if they’re not sure if it can be recycled. But a whole batch can be ruined by a trash item. The city wants to encourage recycling, but not at the result of higher costs or potential contamination of other recyclables.

If residents have questions about recyclable items, they can visit recyclingsimplified.com.

The following items should never be put in recycle bins:

•    Food waste

•    Soiled or wet paper and cardboard

•    Bottles filled with liquid

•    Coffee cups

•    Styrofoam

•    Plastic bags

  • Jacksonville and other North Florida residents are putting trash items in their recycling bins.

  • Taxpayers may have to start paying for the added cost of sorting and contamination caused by trash found in the recycling materials.

  • Residents should verify if a material can be recycled before putting it in their recycling bins or if it needs to be disposed of as trash.
