Bioproximity, a leading provider of fee-for-service proteomics services, has developed anyProteome, an assay designed to improve accessibility to state-of-the-art proteomics assays, making them available to a wider audience.

Rapid advances in mass spectrometry instrumentation and software have led to vastly improved capabilities in the field of proteomics. Advances in instrumentation hardware now permit the identification of over a thousand peptides per minute. Robust, open-source software for proteomics data processing allows consistent and reproducible proteomics data analysis. And improved sample preparation technologies allow nearly every sample, even in the presence of common contaminants, to be processed simply, reproducibly and cost-effectively.

Bioproximity has provided proteomics-based assays and associated services for ten years and has introduced numerous innovations in the field of proteomics data processing and data delivery, such as cloud-based storage and cloud-based data processing which enable fully-automated data processing pipelines. The primary stumbling blocks to wider adoption of proteomics assays have been cost and uncertainty regarding sample quality. Improvements in instrument capabilities have allowed costs to decrease somewhat for a given assay depth. In reality, for most assays these costs have remained flat, while the quantity and quality of reported data has improved. But assessing sample quality prior to an assay remains a largely unaddressed issue.

Bioproximity has leveraged these advances, the fastest mass spectrometer, the most robust sample preparation methods, and fully automated data processing and reporting, to create anyProteome, an assay for almost any proteome, for almost anyone. anyProteome customers have their samples assayed for a modest upfront fee and Bioproximtiy reports the number of protein groups present in each sample, along with other key metrics of sample quality. Customers then have the option to purchase a report which includes protein identity and intensity information, peptide sequences, tandem mass spectra and more. This allows customers to assess sample and data quality and select the appropriate report for their needs, reflective of data quality. The reports are available at a number of tiers to fit common use cases, from low complexity to very high complexity samples. Advanced customers who prefer to process their data themselves have access to the raw data files, without the need to purchase a report.

anyProteome removes much of the risk associated with setting up and designing proteomics experiments. Customers who are just starting out with proteomics have a low-cost-of-entry assay service to help them evaluate their samples. Customers experienced with proteomics who want to test different sample types, treatments, preparations, or other factors, have a simple, cost-effective assay for evaluating their samples. All customers can purchase the report best suited to their samples. If the samples do not meet expectations, the customer is not committed to purchasing a report, and can continue sample optimization and testing. anyProteome reduces the uncertainty in planning and preparing a proteomics assay by increasing the routine, cost-effective availability of these assays with sample-appropriate reports available after data quality is reported to the customer upfront.
