CarBuzz Weighs Up Luxury vs Capability In This Electric SUV Comparison

Cadillac Lyriq vs. Tesla Model Y

New York, NY (PRUnderground) May 4th, 2021

The Cadillac Lyriq was revealed ahead of schedule recently, rivaling the Tesla Model Y. CarBuzz compared the two luxury SUVs to see which is better overall.

Design: Daring or Drab?

While the Lyriq is futuristically styled, the Model Y opts for very bland looks. Sporting a complex grille and attention-grabbing style, the Lyriq has an overly complicated rear end, and rides on 20-inch wheels as standard. The Model Y has 19-inch items and looks tall and skinny by contrast.

Interior: Glam or Bland?

Inside the Lyriq, you’ll find a 33-inch curved display that handles infotainment. The Model Y has only 15 inches on offer, and a rather spartan cabin overall. As expected, the Caddy offers Super Cruise in answer to Tesla’s Autopilot, and boasts a 19-speaker AKG Studio sound system. There are only 14 speakers in the Tesla, but there is a lot more storage space: 68 cubic feet for cargo in total, while the Lyriq maxes out just under 61 cubes. Still, the latter is more opulent inside and has active noise cancellation, too. Car buying tips generally suggest opting for the most practical option – unless you’re buying for status.

Power and Performance

Tesla’s Standard Range Model Y offers up to 244 miles of range on a single charge, which falls below the 300+ that Cadillac claims the Lyriq can manage. And, Tesla’s Long Range and Performance electric SUVs have up to 326 miles and 480 horsepower. This would make the Tesla quicker than the Caddy with 340 hp under the hood, as it weighs in at 1,184 pounds lighter.

Range and Charging

The Lyriq has a 100-kWh battery that can be filled at a rate of 3.5 miles per hour on a 120V outlet – needing three days to recharge fully. Tesla claims the Model Y can recharge to full in almost two days. On a 190-kW DC fast charger, you can get 195 miles of range for the Lyriq in 30 minutes, while a Tesla Supercharger will give you 158 miles in just 15 minutes.

Pricing and Verdict

As the Lyriq is brand new, there are no used car prices to compare. Hot off the press, though, the Lyriq’s $59,990 base price may be relatively impressive for a luxury SUV, but it’s a lot more than the more practical, quicker charging Model Y, with a cost just under $40k. Even if you choose the Long Range Model Y, which beats the Lyriq in terms of range and performance, the price is still sub-$53k. So, when it comes to value for money, the Tesla is the winner, but the Lyriq will most assuredly sell better because of its looks and luxury elements.
