Founded in 1982, Craftsmen Industries, Inc. is a recognized leader in large format printing, including building wraps, large-scale banners, and vehicle wraps. Their 127,000 square foot facility houses all their specialties under one roof, allowing them to complete projects from design, engineering, fabrication, and printing in less time and on a lower budget. Creating a custom wrap for the local Boy Scouts’ STEM trailer and teaching them about the design and printing process is Craftsmen’s way of reaching out to the community and teaching the rising generation new skills.

Although Craftsmen initially focused on trailer sales, they quickly learned that they could grow the business by expanding their services to meet customer needs. More than four decades later, the over 170 employees at Craftsmen can build just about anything a customer wants. With specialties in large scale printing and advertising, as well as mobile trailer design, customization, and fabrication, Craftsmen plays an integral role in many large-scale projects for corporations nationwide.

“Working with the Scouts provided our team a unique opportunity to get young people involved in our business and share our skills and our passion for graphics,” remarked Mark Steele, CEO and Co-Owner of Craftsmen Industries, Inc. “The scouts were challenged to create a design that embodied STEM and we used the top two designs to conceive a trailer wrap. They got to experience the satisfaction we feel each time we see our designs transformed from a drawing into a work of art driving down the highway. I think they really enjoyed it.”

The Boy Scouts of America STEM trailer is a self-contained makerspace designed for use at a variety of meetings and activities. Stocked with materials to teach Scouts about the STEM fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, the trailer allows learning and exploration to occur wherever and whenever by bringing the classroom to the students.

As part of the trailer design project, Craftsmen also offered a merit badge class in graphic design to teach the scouts more about what goes on behind the scenes at Craftsmen. Their experts walked the scouts through the full process of creating a custom vinyl wrap from concept and design to installation. In the process, each participant was able to demonstrate what they learned by designing their own pamphlet to print and take home.

“These young scouts are the leaders and designers of tomorrow,” said Steele. “We were glad to have the opportunity to share a part of what we at Craftsmen do and open their minds to the realm of possibilities for the future.”
