The Phlebotomy Department at Dayton Children’s Hospital is the first of its kind in the nation to earn the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation, granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This designation means that the lab and child life teams had to complete a rigorous training and certification program to help them better assist autistic patients or those with other sensory sensitivities.  The CAC certification also includes an onsite review to provide support and guidance to accommodate patients with sensory needs.

“Our team is honored to be recognized as a Certified Autism Center™,” said Karen Muller, manager of child life services at Dayton Children’s. “Dayton Children’s is committed to caring for autistic patients and/or patients with sensory sensitivities and this designation lets families in our region know that we have the tools and resources available to care for their children.”

In addition to the CAC certification, Dayton Children’s offers a variety of specialty services including pet therapy and music therapy. And the lab and child life teams utilize other tools and equipment to find ways to make patients feel more comfortable whenever possible.

“IBCCES is proud to partner with the team at Dayton Children’s Hospital to help improve outcomes and experiences for autistic patients and their families. This program complements the team’s existing expertise and we’re excited to see the phlebotomy department continue to ensure all patients can receive the care they need,” said Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman.
