The new blog website, which can be found at https://www.drrichardsoper.com/, will be up and running very soon, Dr. Soper said he understands the difficulties that patients face as they pursue access available knowledgeable and reliable health care for substance use disorders. It is for this reason that he created the blog website, whose goal is to educate, communicate and decrease the stigma surrounding addiction.

Dr. Soper, whose behavioral health clinic focuses on self-medicating behaviors and addiction psychiatry, earned his medical degree from University of Tennessee, and trained at University of North Carolina, Johns Hopkins Hospitals, US Indian Health Service, and master’s degree in Addiction Psychology.  He attained board certification in addiction medicine as well as two other specialty areas. In addition, he has his juris doctorate. However, his overall life focus and mission has been to assist individuals struggling with self-medicating and self-harm behaviors. Dr. Soper specifically strives to educate and change beliefs that addiction is the reflection of a defect in a person’s character and realization that addiction is a brain chemistry disorder. The stigma that arises from wrongly believing addiction is a character defect, unfortunately, prevents many individuals from seeking the help that is needed to treat their disorder.

Dr. Soper and the majority of professionals in addiction medicine, believe addiction is a medical disorder that involves dysfunction of brain chemistry, as well as the brain reward system’s neurological pathways.
