Almost every one of us has experienced neck and back pain. Living with it is debilitating. There are several reasons for neck/back pain. From sitting at the desk for prolonged hours to bad sleeping postures, the reasons for the pain keep elongating. Many of us continue to live with the pain, which might impact our health in the longer run. Why live with the pain when there are a lot of ways to manage it? How to manage neck/back pain? Let us ask a prominent physical therapist.

We sought the help of Chad Beauchamp, PT, DPT, SCS, TPI, CSCS, a 2022 ThreeBestRated® award-winning physical therapist in Huntington Beach, California, to provide a few tips for neck/back pain management. He has shared a few insights which can be fruitful for many people suffering from pain. They are as follows:

  • Education: It is imperative to know what is going on exactly, Depending on demographics and how the injury happened. It could mean the difference between a minor stiff neck or back to a severe herniation. If an injury limits an individual from their routine life and lasts longer than seven days, they should get a PT or chiro evaluation.
  • Limit irritating activities while there are signs of pain and inflammation.
  • There are a lot of great and simple neck and back stretches (check out – REPAIR youtube) to help with minor muscle irritation.
  • Engage your core and deep neck flexors. Make sure the proper small stabilizing muscles are activating appropriately. Often when a patient has pain or inflammation in an area, the local stabilizing muscle turns off and becomes spasmed.
  • Proper nutrition, hydration, rest, breathwork, and meditation. When specifically discussing injuries and even more so, injuries to the spine and or neurologic system, nutrition, and hydration are imperative. Including but not limited to eliminating processed foods and alcohol that cause systemic inflammation.

Additionally, getting proper rest, correcting breathing patterns, and mediation help manage stress caused by an injury and pain. Our bodies repair during sleep. So, proper sleep is imperative for repair. Breathwork and meditation help manage blood flow and decrease sympathetic nervous system drive. When our bodies are in “fight or flight” (ramped up sympathetic nervous system), it is very challenging for our bodies to repair themselves. It is also essential to manage the mental aspect of depression and self-limiting factors caused by injuries or personal mental-spiritual hardships.

Dr. Chad Beauchamp has been an athlete since his childhood. He was a football player, played football till his college days until he succumbed to injuries. “By the time I was 19, I had four surgeries (now 7). I have always had a spot in my heart for athletes. Sports physical therapy seemed the way to go,” said Dr. Chad. He then pursued a BS in exercise kinesiology & nutrition from Central Michigan University.

He completed his doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Southern California. Following graduation from PT school in 2011, he did a sports residency at the University of Cincinnati, where he worked with their football team. Later, Dr. Chad worked at a sports clinic for three years while completing a sports fellowship program focusing on research and new age rehabilitation programs.

Dr. Chad opened REPAIR Sports Institute in 2015. “The biggest reason I wanted to open my own clinic is that I wanted to create a collaborative, holistic practice where PT chiros Acupuncture trainers, and eastern medicine specialists all came together,” said Dr. Chad. At the clinic, they focus a lot on both manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, new age modalities, and most of all education. Teaching these athletes how to take care of themselves and not only following what is best for the teams but what is best for them. Mentally, physically and spiritually. He takes immense pride in creating a business that is truly encompassing when it comes to taking care of the entire patient in a collaborative environment with professionals across the spectrum of rehab. Also, Dr. Chad cares for the well-being of his staff just as he cares for his patients.

Dr. Chad works with USA beach volleyball Olympians traveling the world and locally with NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB players to make sure they are ready for the season. He has been recently honored with the ThreeBestRated® award for his excellence in the field of physical therapy. Upon receiving the award, he said, “I feel proud, grateful and overall appreciative. I have never been good at accepting compliments. This one, I am open arms too because it’s about what we are doing here and not just about me. I am grateful for my team and the patients that entrust their hard-earned money, time, and bodies to us.”
