Event to Celebrate the Life of Mountaineer Scott Fischer

Industry: Events

Evening will also include discussions of Sherpa culture and mountain climbing.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (PRUnderground) June 21st, 2016

On Tuesday, June 7, from 7:00 to 10 pm at the Writers Boot Camp in Santa Monica, an event will be held to remember world-renowned mountain climber Scott Fischer, while raising funds for SherpaCares. Climber Ed Viesturs will also be presenting a slideshow and a lecture on his conquests of the world’s highest mountains, including K2. And, there will be a discussion of Sherpa culture.

Mr. Fischer was a mountaineer and mountain guide who died in the 1996 Everest climbing disaster. His story was recently told in the movie Everest, where he was portrayed by actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

The event was organized by Mr. Fischer’s children, Andy and Katie Rose, in partnership with a nonprofit group called SherpaCares. The goal for the evening is to raise money towards rebuilding and expanding the Himalayan English Boarding School in Lukla, Nepal, which was destroyed in the 2015 earthquakes.

Dawa Geljen Sherpa will also be speaking. He will discuss the loss of Sherpa culture, how this culture must be preserved in rural mountain regions, and how the Himalayan English Boarding School plays a part in this. The school will also honor Mr. Fischer’s involvement with the Sherpa culture.

The evening will include a silent auction, live music, drinks and snacks. A guided trek to Everest Base Camp will also be auctioned.

“Mr. Fischer’s story is a fascinating one, and one anyone interested in mountain climbing or other cultures should hear,” said Ahmed Nashaat, who will be attending the event. “I am also happy to be giving to SherpaCares, a worthy and important organization.”

Representatives of SherpaCares have also announced that the organization International Relief Teams will match the donations up to $40,000.
