Camping meals don't just have to be beans and hot dogs with proper planning.

According to the website Camping Forge (https://www.campingforge.com), family camping is a way to build lasting memories. However, many families find themselves cooking the same meals over and over such as beans and hot dogs. But with proper planning, preparation, and basic cooking skills anyone can add variety to their camping meals, according to camping expert, Teena Kulakowski.

According to Kulakowski a popular option in her family is to make a “Cowgirl Supper.”  This is a simple dish that even children can help prepare. It does require access to a campfire or a charcoal barbeque grill.

“Take chopped potatoes, veggies and meat chunks with some olive oil and spices and wrap them tightly in tin foil. Place the tin foil packs on hot coals for about 25 minutes,” says Kulakowski.

According to Kulakowski freeze-dried food is one of the best ways to carry a variety of meals on a camping trip. According to Wikipedia, freeze-drying is a process of using cold temperatures to freeze food to increase shelf-life by reducing the moisture content. People can buy pre-packaged freeze-dried meals, or they can make them at home. Kulakowski says to make sure to have access to fresh, clean water when preparing this food to avoid illness.

According to Kulakowski camping families should bring plenty of containers to hold their fresh water.

Kulakowski also recommends that family campers track what you eat on days when your activity level is high, and you are participating in outdoor sports. This will give parents an idea of the bare minimum of the amount of food needed to satisfy hunger.

“You’ll want to purchase or repack food in resealable plastic bags to cut down on the waste you’ll have to carry out with you on a backcountry trip,” she says.

Kulakowski also says that if you’re camping at a designated campground that you should be able to recycle and dump your trash on site.
