FIG is has a SAVAGE style. The word itself makes the snootiest of people cringe, which admittedly can be entertaining. Identifying as a Savage makes it easy to identify people or companies that don’t align with us or our values. Like most we seek alignment based on personality and values. Honesty is a core value of ours and it’s a value we seek in others.

We’ve all wasted enough time sparing feelings. Sparing feelings is why companies feel comfortable rapidly hiring minorities in 2021 without any regard for their experiences. The sparing of feelings is what leads us to believe that these actions equal caring about diversity.

Leaders have the responsibility to lead with honesty – not just pleasantries. We should we be less concerned that an association member was offended for not asking how her dog was doing, but take a serious her hesitation is describing the representation of her board members? We have to shift this mindset.

Some stuffy types might read this and think of course a black woman would say such things. She’s probably “angry.” “Uneducated.” “Difficult.” None of the above. FIG believes the most powerful tool any of us has, is honesty. Our commitment is to our values and the responsibility to protect those values. The flipside of that coin is, we’re an incredible asset to those that shares the same values.

Values are what bind us. Values are what separate us. They are what defines who we are and how we respond.

If values line up between companies or people, the possibilities are endless. Your cause becomes their cause. Their strength and savageness become your strength and savageness. That’s the power of connection. As leaders, we have to stop wasting our time with people and companies pretending to share our values and take our culture seriously. Or, suffer the consequences of mistrust and declining sales.
