Finding North is a one-man virtual play written, produced and performed by David Gonzalez with Daniel Carlton. It tells the important story of John P. Parker, a former enslaved man who took an active part in freeing others.

There’s no denying the importance of teaching young students about the critical ongoing fight for freedom and equality in the United States, and its brave heroes. Writer, producer, and performer of theater, music, and poetry David Gonzalez understands this need well and has integrated it into his work. In exciting news for schools interested in being a positive force in the sphere of social justice, Gonzalez recently announced his new play Finding North is now available for schools to view, ideally for students in fifth grade and up. Finding North is offered pre-recorded, telling the true story of the remarkable and powerful life of John P. Parker, a formerly enslaved man who worked hard as part of the Underground Railroad, to liberate more than four hundred enslaved people and deliver them to (relative) safety. Intertwining through the show are stories of current immigrants who share their own heart touching, and harrowing, stories of how they came to the United States to live a better life. Michael Griffin, Programs Manager at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center called Finding North, “A brilliant and powerful piece for all ages and races.”
“Finding North is a celebration of the ongoing quest for freedom and justice in the United States,” commented Gonzalez. “I believe it will have a powerful impact on the students who see it. America has had many heroes, that are, unfortunately, not as widely known as they should be. Finding North tries to help change that for John P. Parker.”
The play is appropriate for fine arts, theater, language arts, history, and self-development curriculums. Finding North is currently available as a pre-recorded performance with a live questions and answers segment.

Finding North is a one-man play drawn from historical research that brings to the stage the powerful stories of the strivings, sacrifices and dreams of African-American Underground Railroad hero John P. Parker. Parker’s tale is intercut with verbatim interview material from immigrants and non-immigrants who tell their stories of searching for haven in modern-day America.
