Forgotten Tragedy: The Story of the St. Francis Dam, a documentary film by California filmmaker Jesse Cash, is a Semi-Finalist for Best Documentary at the AltFF Alternative Film Festival in Toronto, Canada. The film telling the story of the worst man-made disaster in 20th century America is the first feature length documentary to tell the tale. Since its release in mid-December, the film has been well-recieved nationwide. It has been an official selection of several film festivals, and was named the Best Documentary at the Hollywood International Independent Film Festival, in December of 2018.
Hard as it is to believe, the failure of the St. Franics Dam has been largely forgotten on all but a local level. The tragedy that captured the world’s attention in the days following the 1928 collapse, has largely faded from memory. This film brings the story to life by telling the tale of the ill-fated dam, and the constant struggle for water that made it necessary. With viewership numbers steadily climbing in Amazon’s Prime Video, the tale is meeting with growning interest through the US, and now in Canada as well.
With the President’s recent signature, the location of the tragedy will now become a national monument, forever preserving the site of the failed structure, and the lands surrounding. These events have created newfound interest in the events surrounding the collapse of the structure at 30 seconds past 11:57 PM on the night of March 12, 1928 (ninety-one years ago tonight).
Cash said, “I made the film hoping to shine a light on this tragedy, and on the 431 souls killed that night. Those people, and the families deserve to be remembered. I am thrilled to hear that the St. Francis Dam tragedy will finally receive the national honor it deserves.”
