1. Make grooming at home a normal part of your dog care.
2. Gently squeeze and hold your dog’s paws, ears, muzzle, back legs, and feet often, and reward them for the experience.
3. Visit your grooming shop every 4-6 weeks for their haircut and bath. Avoid long breaks in between grooming appointments as this will cause them unnecessary stress.
4. Take your dog for a nice walk before the groom. Reward them when you arrive and when you pick them up.
5. Pop in for visits to your groomers when you are not scheduled. This can help build a positive association with the environment.

Nik has been in the dog service industry since 2009. But there is a story behind how he found his passion. “After going through two brain surgeries and radiation therapy, I found my passion for working with animals,” he says.

Shortly after that, he went on to own and operate a dog training franchise where he won the most satisfied client award in Canada in 2012. But later, he sold that business and launched Dharma Dog Services with the goal of improving the customer experience in the dog grooming industry.

In addition to dog grooming services, they also provide dog training. As a dog behaviour specialist, Nik, aims to help owners learn to communicate clearly with their fur babies.

“As humans, we speak countless languages and have a variety of dialects. Yet, we expect dogs to be able to understand them all! While dogs are able to demonstrate an ability to form word associations, learning English or any other language can not replace their own forms of communication. A border collie has roughly the same ability to understand human language as your average 3-year-old human. Your average 3-year-old has a limited vocabulary! So do dogs. That is why my approach with dogs is to speak and listen in dog,” he explains.

“I am hoping to continue providing exceptional customer service, adding some new features and services, while maintaining a sense of normalcy for our customers during this difficult period of time,” he says. Nik also has some exciting plans for 2021. “We are launching our microbubble bath upgrade this year. It is a therapeutic service for dogs with skin conditions,” he explains.
