Nadira “Naz” Pankey, writer and director, and Andrew R. McCallister, lead actor and producer, have announced the official debut of their new film ‘Gerald’s Hands’ on Tubi. Now, people with internet access can watch ‘Gerald’s Hands’ from virtually any smart device for free.
‘Gerald’s Hands’ is an inspirational new film in which McCallister plays the role of Gerald, an autistic and kind-loving character who is navigating loss, love, and the struggle of keeping his home. In this film, audiences are led to contemplate over whether or not a person on the spectrum can fall in love with someone who is not and what that might look like.
The film takes audiences on a roller coaster of emotions including humor, sadness, and celebration as it hones in on themes of autism, loneliness, death, grief, mortality, compassion, love, family, and friendship.
Moreover, ‘Gerald’s Hands’ is making a ripple effect as it lifts the veil on some of the the unspoken issues of autism. For instance, being on the spectrum in society often means being met with bullying and domestic violence. In ‘Gerald’s Hands’, Gerald is met with both of these, and his reactions are absolutely riveting.
“We believe autism is in every group and community, and we want to bring awareness,” said Pankey. “Also, we want to stop bullying in general but especially in the autistic community.”
1 in 44 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and 40% of children with autism do not speak. The word “autism” literally means “alone”, a feeling that many people with autism are familiar with because of the whiplash of a society that largely does not understand what they face. Pankey and the team behind ‘Gerald’s Hands’ are on a mission to make a lasting impact on the way society sees autism.
