NYT: Who has been influential in your journey as an evangelist?
PJC: God and Jesus first. Old time pastors like W. A. Criswell, Billy Sunday, Mordecai Ham, Billy Graham, and David Wilkerson all had it going on. They reached hundreds of thousands of people. As the founders of River Terrace Church, Pastor William Carter and his wife Mrs. Catherine Carter believed in the Cowboy Church. They are true Christians and truly great people who serve God. I’m thankful for their support and thankful to Pastor Carter for his mentorship and friendship.
NYT: You have a saying “Hope is like sunshine, everybody needs a ray of it.”
PJC: Yes. God never intended for this world to be the way it is. This is His masterpiece. The Bible shows time after time He drew people back, only to have them fall away again. He saw and sees the struggle and the pain—that’s why He sent Jesus Christ, to give us hope for life. Churches are closing at a record rate because the people in the pulpit aren’t preaching the Gospel the way it’s supposed to be done. It’s being done to lift them up, not God or Jesus. The Gospel of Jesus Christ, when preached the way He taught it, will bring hope to people. Faith builds that hope.
NYT: How do you draw people back to the small community churches?
PJC: The small community churches were once the center of a community. They still can be and grow. First the pastor needs to look at what is being preached and what is being done by the congregation. Is it truly what Jesus taught? Jesus gave us everything that needs to be done within a church. The Bible shows what the apostles, especially Paul, did to grow Christianity. If that is being done then revival will happen.
NYT: Do you have anything else you want to add?
PJC: A good solid church can change the foundation of a community. I believe that. I believe that all of these little churches all over the country can thrive again and make communities better, but you have to support them. Don’t go to a worship service because of the worship service. Go someplace where you can worship. Go someplace where you can get your God on. Go someplace where you can get your Jesus on. Go someplace where the pastor really tries to get you to better yourself. You will better your family and the community. That’s revival.
