With the help of Atlanta-based Collins Project Management, thyssenkrupp Elevator, a Fortune Global 500 company, broke ground on its Innovation and Qualification Center (IQC) at The Battery Atlanta, home of the Atlanta Braves. The companies gathered on April 18 with local leaders as well as representatives from Braves Development Company, Gensler (building architect) and Brasfield & Gorrie (general contractor) to kick off construction.

This is thyssenkrupp’s most high-profile project in the U.S. as it moves its North American Headquarters to the Atlanta metro.  When it opens in 2021, the IQC will include an elevator test tower that will stand as Cobb County’s highest building at 420 feet. Three floors at the top of the tower will provide panoramic views of the surrounding areas for special functions.

The project also includes consolidation of thyssenkrupp’s business and engineering functions in a new corporate headquarters (CHQ) building that is adjacent to the test tower. The combined CHQ and IQC projects are valued at $200 million.

“When we announced plans for our new headquarters last summer, we knew we needed a construction project management partner that would keep us on track to meet our aggressive deadlines,” said Steve Allen, Vice President of Engineering for thyssenkrupp Elevator North America. “The insight and expertise Collins has brought to the table has been greatly appreciated as we continue our transition to our new home.”

“We’re thrilled to be a part of the thyssenkrupp team and to oversee a unique project for this innovative company,” said Joe Collins, president of Collins Project Management, whose company has managed nearly 300 construction projects.

Collins’ first priority was to tightly align the team. He invited thyssenkrupp’s leadership; architects from global design firm Gensler; and representatives from Brasfield & Gorrie to participate in Collins’ SamePageSM workshop.

“We think it’s crucial that members of the design and construction team hear directly from our client’s leadership before they start working on the project,” Collins said. “We spent a day talking about the goals, the mission and how we’re going to work together, support each other and communicate. It’s critical we’re open and transparent with each other.”

Collins compared the construction industry to the healthcare industry to illustrate the importance of getting on the same page. Typically a surgical team works together for so long that they know the nuances of each other’s hand signals. Like any other multimillion dollar build, the thyssenkrupp project brought together a team of people who haven’t worked together before. The SamePage workshop shortened the learning curve and provided clear direction from the outset.

To kick off the process, Collins led the team through what it calls “Gives and Gets.” The exercise allowed team members to compare their expectations of each other and set ground rules for how they will collaborate and work together. As usual, there were some surprises and healthy debates, but the result was a project team that was better aligned and prepared for the challenges that it will face.
