Hacked in Groningen is the Netherlands first Hackathon league - Innovation as a Sport!

Groningen, Netherlands (PRUnderground) March 9th, 2016

IoTifiers were the big winners at Hacked in Groningen’s first league event which focussed on Internet of Things winning Best Commercial Concept and Best Overall Hack which was held at Launchcafe in Groningen on the weekend of February 26-28th, 2016.

This was the first ever hackathon for the team, who came up from the south of The Netherlands to compete in the event. Their product was a truly innovative Internet of Things product which would help replace systems in manufacturing factories to drastically cut down time between runs where, in the past changing settings takes up too much time, which could save companies six figures a year in streamlining processes.

Nariman Aga-Tagiyev, Captain of the Iotifiers team and Software Security Architect from Tilburg said:

“We really never expected to win any prizes at all, this is our first hackathon.”

He added that it was due to the coaching from Hackathon organiser Jurjen Söhne from The Hackitarians Foundation that really helped them make their idea more simple and presentable and without the help they probably would not have won.

Picking up the prize for Best Overall Design was Kwiet, who came up with a brilliant solution for clamping down on bike theft in the Netherlands with a solution tapping into the new emerging Lorawan networks being put into place in the country.

Best Coding and Technology was won by Topocity who came up with a unique solution using Lorawan and Internet of Things to help a Stichting in Friesland manage solar power networks more affordably and more efficiently in African villages.

All three of the top finished teams plan to carry on forward and build startups out of their ideas, which were formed and worked on at the event.

In the community vote, which determine the league standings and where all participants were able to vote on each other’s projects, eCO2Drone picked up Best Overall Design, Iotifiers took Best Commercial Concept and Kweit won Best Coding/Technology.

Backed by IBM and The City of Groningen, Hacked in Groningen is The Netherlands’ first hackathon league.

The next hackathon in the event series is planned for June 24-26th and will focus on Big Data.
