High school star catches the eye of big-time college basketball schools
Miami, Florida (PRUnderground) December 21st, 2015
Jon Brown, a 6’6″ point guard from Miami, Florida, recently set a new state high by scoring 51 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists, and followed that performance up with a 42-point game, which included a game winning basket. With several Division I scouts in attendance, these performances have earned Brown some much-deserved national attention.
Brown’s Sports Leadership and Management Charter School (SLAM) is now on the statewide radar with a record of 10-1 after these performances. But despite the high stakes and the presence of scouts who could help determine his future, Brown said that he felt “no pressure” during the games, and expects to perform even better.
“I should have had 50,” he said of the second performance. “I missed some free throws and some easy buckets, but my team coming out with the ‘W’ is all that matters.”
Brown currently ranks fourth in the state of Florida in scoring, trailing the leader by only 1.8 points per game. He also ranks third in assists. Remarkably, Brown is currently averaging a triple double at 29 points per game, 11 rebounds per game and 10 assists per game.
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to maintain that, but it’s definitely a worthy goal,” he said. “I honestly just want to win a district, regional and state title, and earn some respect for my school.”
Brown has been preparing for collegiate basketball success since he was in 7th grade, occasionally playing AAU with Troy Bradford and Earl Kelly, but working specifically with his personal skill coach and trainer Kenny Anderson, a point guard legend, NBA All Star, Georgia Tech All-American and former number one high school player in America. Anderson knows talent. Kelly led the United States in scoring in 1982, and eventually became the Big East Rookie of the Year while at the University of Connecticut. Anderson sees great things in Brown’s future.
“Most kids end where Jon is only just beginning,” said Anderson. “This kid is 6’6″, 170 [pounds] and just turned 17. He’s taller and longer than I ever was. He’s a nightmare for defenders, too big for small guards and too quick for big men. I’ve taught him how to have vision with passing, low dribble cross-over skills, the lost art of the mid-range game, and how to use backboard angles, which are all rare qualities for a new-age point guard. His IQ is off the charts. This kid is special. Look for big things from him in the future.”
Brown has become increasingly coveted by big-name schools across the nation, with schools like Stanford, Columbia, Dartmouth, Kansas, Wofford and Rutgers all gaining interest in him.
