Over 15% of the world population speaks Mandarin Chinese. This makes Chinese the most popular language in the world.

Yet, when foreign speakers think of Chinese, the first thing that comes to their minds is how hard the language is.

Lusine Torosyan, a Chinese language scholar, has combined her linguistic expertise and drawing talents to make learning-Chinese easier.

While researching for ways to make Chinese characters memorable, Lusine stumbled across the idea of game association methods. Lusine’s n next step was to come up with 300+ drawings and short story narratives and associate each drawing and narrative with a Chinese character.

“What makes Chinese hard for most foreigners is that the Chinese characters are very different from other languages” says Lusine. “However, everybody speaks the language of story and pictures.”

Skinny Bottle, a book publisher, has made Lusine’s work available in Kindle eBook, Paperback (black and white), and Hardback (color) format. The book title is “Chinese Characters with Associations” and it is available now through online book retailers and on-request, at brick & mortar bookstores all over the world.

“Read this if you want to learn Chinese and you can remember pictures easier than symbols,” says Ioannis Tsiokos, Publishing Manager at Skinny Bottle.

For a sample of Lusine’s work, or to check if learning by association is for you, you can check this Medium article that includes some of the original artwork from the book.

HSK Level 2 students can use the book to easily memorize Chinese characters and pass the exam. However, Lusine also advises that memorizing Chinese characters in isolation is not enough. Students should also read Chinese texts and try to use the characters soon after they have “visually” memorized them.
