Legacy Arts Group Cast of The Beautiful Ugly Hosts A Masquerade Fundraiser: Legacy Live on the River

Industry: Art & Design

African American students from Minneapolis public schools have been selected to participate in the world-renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in August 2022.

Minneapolis, MN (PRUnderground) September 16th, 2021

The Beautiful Ugly is a powerful theatrical display written and performed by the Legacy Arts Group youth ensemble as a response to their experiences and views on the local impact of the George Floyd incident and the Covid-19 pandemic. The cast of four Minneapolis teens tell a story of anger, fear, loss, community, identity, and ultimately hope as they braid poetry, original songs, dance, and vignettes in this emotionally charged stage production.

The Cast: Moziah Thomas, Danielle Roberson, Antonio Brooks, Judah Zoe Gardner

Directed by: Legacy Arts Group Executive Director Tamiko French

We are taking our story to the world!

The American High School Theater Festival (www.ahstf.org) has been curating high school theater groups for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for over 25 years. However, for the first time in North Minneapolis history, African American students from Minneapolis public schools have been selected to participate in the world-renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in August 2022. The youth will not only be participating in the Fringe Festival in Scotland but, while in Europe they will participate in a tour of colleges in Scotland and London, England. The youth will see theatre from all over the world, attend the International College Fair, and interact with peers from many different countries. What’s even better is the youth will receive college credit for participating.

Why a Masquerade Ball fundraiser?

Legacy Arts has a goal to raise $50,000 for the cast and crew to attend the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. To help them get there, Legacy Arts Group (www.legacyartsgroup.com), in conjunction with Unlocked Mission (www.unlockedmission.com), is inviting you to a masquerade ball. The exclusive pre-Halloween event will feature a live recording of the preview performance of The Beautiful Ugly as well as additional musical performances by the cast and other special guests. The event will be hosted by Legacy Arts alumni and cohosted by renown Sounds of Blackness vocalist and Twin Cities actress Jamecia Bennett. Musical enjoyment and accompaniment for the evening will be provided by the Thom West trio. There will be a silent auction during the social hour and other activities as well as a complimentary dinner and wine.
