Marriage and Family Therapist André Anthony Moore Integrates Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming (EMDR) into His Clinical Practice

Licensed marriage and family therapist, André Anthony Moore is now integrating Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) into his practice, following completion of approved EMDR training.

André Anthony Moore, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in New York City, is now a certified practitioner of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). He completed EMDR International Association approved training in October, 2018.   

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is a unique, non-traditional form of integrative psychotherapy designed to help clients grieve, work through and clear out negative thoughts and feelings about themselves that result from long buried, traumatic experiences such as tragic accidents, loss of a loved one or much earlier birth trauma, loss of a beloved caretaker, emotional, physical and sexual abuse.  

“While sleeping, humans dream or process their emotional experiences in a sleep pattern that alternates between regular sleep and rapid eye movement or REM sleep,” says Andre Moore, Founder of Marriage Couples Counseling. “ EMDR is like dreaming, only the client is fully awake and thus potentially able to alter, reshape and clear out the negative aspects or painful parts of what he’s feeling.”

An EMDR session includes the following which is the heart of The EMDR Standard Protocol:

  1. What do you wish to work on today? (Trigger or incident)

  2. What does it say about you that this happened? Does it say there’s something wrong with you?

  3. Looking at yourself in the here and now, what would you like to say or believe about yourself? Are you more than that? What else?

  4. When you think of what happened (Trigger or Incident that occurred), how true does what you’d like to believe about yourself feel, right now in the present, on a scale of 1 to 7?

  5. Now when you think back to what happened (Trigger or Incident that occurred), what’s the feeling? What emotions come up now?

  6. How big is that? How disturbing does it feel to you on a scale of 0 to 10?

  7. Where do you feel it in your body? Feel it there, right now. Go with that.

The client is then encouraged to process these feelings with eye movements, tapping or sounds using earphones until negative thoughts and feelings are reshaped, altered and cleared out and the client is able to integrate new insights and perspectives in daily life.
