Marriage Couples Counseling Incorporates Neuroscience Therapy “The Flash” For Couples

Industry: Family & pets

New York City based marriage and family therapist André Anthony Moore is now successfully treating patient anxiety using a neuroscience therapy technique called “The Flash.” Geared to reduce memory-related distress in individuals, André is also seeing positive results when using the technique with couples.

Marriage Couples Counseling in New York City is now using a new, neuroscience-based technique called The Flash. First discovered and developed by Philip Manfield, Ph.D. and Lewis Engel, Ph.D., it was mainly used to treat individuals. Now we are using the technique to reduce anxieties in individuals and couples; anxieties erupting from painful, non-verbal memories hard to describe in words, lodged in the amygdala and hippocampus, the feeling portions of their brains, and felt throughout their bodies and relived in the present.

The Flash enables therapists to help their patients quickly reduce anxieties triggered by stressful events in the present, anxieties that can take on a life of their own as early traumatic memories are unconsciously relived in the present. The Flash also helps patients more easily process trauma-based anxieties triggered by future stressors.

“The efficacy and success of The Flash in helping my patients deal more easily with intense anxiety and extremely painful feelings in the present paired with my use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming (EMDR) is the reason I incorporated this form of therapy into couples counseling,” says Andre Moore, Founder of Marriage Couples Counselling.

In the treatment, patients are asked to jump away from a painful, anxious place to a safer, feel-good memory or image. They are then prompted to enhance this comforting image using a few short, slow sets of eye movements, preferably with a Neurotek Machine, wand or yardstick. As patients follow with their eyes, they blink in and process the comforting memory. Finally, patients are asked to recall their anxiety triggered by the present stressor. The expectation is that the anxiety triggered by that stressor will be significantly reduced.

Couples can be asked to recall an anxious, painful moment they shared together, then imagine a happier, more soothing moment they shared and deepen their feelings and emotions in that moment using the Flash. Thus, couples can more easily overcome difficult, painful experiences together in the present and deepen the safety and intimacy of the relationship.
