Animal Rescue Inc. Uses Mason Foundation for Animal Shelter Design Matching Grant for Conceptual Drawings from Ammon Heisler Sachs Architects

New Freedom, PA (PRUnderground) June 6th, 2017

Animal Rescue Inc. in New Freedom, PA, a recipient of a matching grant from the Mason Foundation for Animal Shelter Design in January 2017, retained the Ammon Heisler Sachs Architects in Baltimore, MD. Ammon Heisler Sachs Architects completed conceptual drawings for a new 1,200 square-foot clinic  as well as an additional 1,200 square-foot lower level that will be used for animal recovery.

The design of the new facility includes a large operating room and surgical recovery area that accommodates two veterinarians as well as a pre-op and post-op area. This will allow Animal Rescue Inc. to perform low-cost spay/neuter surgeries five days a week rather than just one or two. Currently, Animal Rescue Inc. is sterilizing approximately 2,000 animals per year, though the demand in the Maryland-South Central Pennsylvania area is much greater.

“It has always been our dream to expand our spay/neuter focus as a way to slow down the animal population and affect more animals,” said Phillip Staelens, Animal Rescue Inc. director and Board treasurer. “My wife and I are really excited as this matching grant from the Mason Foundation for Animal Shelter Design is helping to make a dream come true for us.”

The new facility will also include a reception and admissions area as well as access to a parking lot. This will eliminate the need for animals brought in for surgery to be transported from the current small admissions building to the existing clinic.

“We worked closely with Animal Rescue Inc. to observe their existing process and constraints so we could better understand how to develop an efficient layout and design,” said Joe Heisler, principal with Ammon Heisler Sachs Architects, who has extensive experience designing hospitals and medical facilities.

Animal Rescue Inc. will also maintain the existing facility to more efficiently conduct wellness checks of our shelter animals and as a place to house ill animals.

Animal Rescue Inc.’s service area includes the City of York and the surrounding counties in South Central Pennsylvania, as well as Baltimore City and surrounding Maryland counties.

Greg Taylor, Executive Director of the Mason Foundation for Animal Shelter Design, said, “A needs assessment and accurate initial architectural plans are fundamental to ensuring an optimal design for layout, flow and efficiency. This can avoid costly mistakes down the road and help secure capital campaign funding for building or remodeling an animal shelter.”
