Move Over, Facebook: Digital Nomads Using New Aether App to Connect

Industry: Technology

The Aether App Makes Global Meetups with Other Nomads a Cinch

Portola Valley, CA (PRUnderground) August 18th, 2017

Ask any intrepid backpacker, digital nomad, or remote worker about the frustrations of trying to connect across oceans, countries, and seas whether Facebook is a useful tool to arrange “IRL” connections, and eyes will roll.

Although Facebook is in the headlines again for passing two billion users globally in June, the social media giant is ill-equipped to help digital nomads quickly see where and what their friends are up to. As a result, many are turning to specialized apps such as the Aether app to create tight-knit networks where vital information is just a tap away.

“I came up with the concept of Aether because I was frustrated by endless wading through social media to see what friends were up to, and trying to arrange connections,” said Laurel Tincher, long-time digital nomad and founder of the Aether app. “I wanted to see where my friends were at a glance, let them see where I was and make it easy to meet up. As it turns out, Aether is also a fantastic place to get ideas about my next destination! This is an app that truly makes the world feel like a global village.”

The allure of the digital nomad lifestyle is easy to see: a life away from the 9-5 grind where the office and landscape changes frequently while working out of a suitcase has compelled hundreds of thousands to embrace the lifestyle.

“We still don’t know how many digital nomads there are,” said Steve King of Emergent Research. “It’s hard to measure, but it’s pretty clearly growing at a strong rate.” He added that humans, as social beings, needed to stay in touch, not just with home, but with others. Apps like Aether are filling in this much-needed gap while removing the frustrating limits that Facebook offers, despite it’s almost near-ubiquity.

“Rapid technological progression enables millions of people to work from anywhere in the world, as long as there is an internet connection,” notes Tomas Laurinavicius in Forbes. With more than 1 billion digital nomads expected to join the global workforce by 2035, apps like the Aether app will become an increasingly important part of their mobile toolkit.
