Mr. Mike Tornabe Talks on Diesel-Electric Hybrid Train

Industry: Travel & Leisure

Michael Tornabe explains how diesel-hybrid trains are the future of American transportation.

Brooklyn, New York (PRUnderground) July 6th, 2016

Much can be said of car and transportation expert and well-known entrepreneur Mike Tornabe, but his passion for futuristic transportation technologies by far outweighs many of his sterling attributes. To this end, Mr. Tornabe hosts regular meetups with like-minded individuals to delve further into the nitty-gritties of some of these technologies and their possible impact on life as we understand it.

It was during one such meetup that the inventor and patent-holder delved into the specifics of the soon-to-come diesel-electric hybrid train. “The next 12 months will lay the groundwork for trials on the first high-speed, diesel-electric hybrid train in Europe, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 50 percent.”

According to Michael Tornabe, the technology has been built in Japan by Hitachi, and is made up of battery-assisted, diesel-electric hybrid traction engine. As an expert in car mechanics himself, he delved into the under-the-hood details of such an engine: “The engine’s traction unit utilizes the battery power when the train is resting, as well as to power the early acceleration phases, until speeds of 20 mph (30 kph) are attained. From this point, the conventional diesel-powered engine kicks in to drive the train.”

He further added that the first diesel-electric traction unit is set to be fitted into the New Measurement rain from Network Rail which, apart from its major part in monitoring rail track conditions, doubles up as the perfect technology test bed.

According to the Japanese manufacturers, the technology has been relatively tested in Japan, and these tests have demonstrated that use of the hybrid train system could reduce gas emission by as much as half, and costs of fuels by around 20 percent.

“For the rail industry, cost of fuel and level of greenhouse gas emissions are two important considerations. The point of focus is improving sustainability to power future transportation systems in the long-term.”

In conclusion, Mr. MikeTornabe resounded his enthusiasm for the project, which is set to kick off in April 2016 in the UK, lasting six months. According to Hitachi, this follows a development phase that began in 2003, with one system already being produced for a Japanese client.
