Jessica Pitman, DNP, CRNA, will lead 1,600 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists

Albany, NY (PRUnderground) October 22nd, 2018

The New York State Association of Nurse Anesthetists (NYSANA) today announced that the organization’s Board of Directors has elected Jessica Pitman, DNP, CRNA, president.

Pitman, a Monroe, Orange County, resident, replaces Cheryl Spulecki, DNAP, ACNP, CRNA, who will serve as immediate past-president for the next year.

The announcement comes after NYSANA’s Annual Educational Meeting in New York City – a three-day conference which this year focused on the nation’s’ opioid crisis and the rising use of opioid-free anesthesia.

Pitman is CRNA at NYU Langone Health, and she has advocated in Albany and Washington, D.C., on behalf of New York’s nurse anesthetists from the early stages of her career.

“After working with Jessica for the past year as our vice president, I am confident in her abilities to lead NYSANA,” said Spulecki, whose new title will be immediate past-president. “Her ambition is admirable and I look forward to seeing her leadership at work in New York.”

New board members include David Monahan, CRNA, who will serve as secretary. Monahan, of New York City, is employed by New York Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital. Bethany Sheppard, SRNA, Of Berkeley Heights, NJ, will join the board, representing 400 Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists. Sheppard is earning her CRNA license at Columbia University.

Pitman started her career in Buffalo, working in Neurosurgical and Pediatric ICUs before attending Columbia University’s Nurse Anesthesia program.

“I am eager to assume my responsibilities as NYSANA president, and I welcome our new board members,” she said. “Over the next year I would like to focus on bringing more attention to NYSANA’s effort to advance opioid-free anesthesia as a viable substitute before, during and after surgery. And we will continue to advocate in Albany for legislation that favors our members and improves health care in New York.”

Pitman and Spulecki offered thanks to those members who are leaving the board, including Barbara Elliott Capogna, CRNA, who served as immediate past-president and will join the Nominating Committee; David Leal, CRNA – a director; and Kenneth Dagles, SRNA, for his work advocating for student NYSANA members. Leal also will serve on the Nominating Committee.

Remaining members of the NYSANA board include:

  • Stephanie Grolemund, MSN, CRNA, Vice President, Lancaster, Erie County
  • Jennifer Haug, CRNA, Treasurer, New York, New York
  • Meaghan McCloskey, MS, CRNA, Director, Saugerties, Ulster County
  • Yana Krmic, CRNA, MSN, Director, Somers, Westchester County
