Fuchsia 1971-2021: A truly groundbreaking Psych Folk band
For the self conscious young man who refused the offer of scissors to cut off the artist’s dress in Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece at The Alexandra Palace 14 Hour Technicolour Dream (Cut Piece) way back in 1967, Tony Durant has come a long way. Some great but brief moments: a passing chat with Floyd’s Syd Barrett on the stairs at UFO club, the heady days of London’s Psychedelia (his band Louise were inducted into the British Music Archive recently), then his Psych Folk masterpiece Fuchsia, which critics finally acknowledged 35 years after its release in 1971.
The Australia connection came in 1978 with his playing on and producing Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs gold album, Mugs Game, and later music for Alan Bond’s 1983 and 1987 Americas Cup challenges.
The long-awaited follow up in 2013, From Psychedelia to a Distant Place achieved remarkable reviews. Then there was Fuchsia Song (vinyl 2020) and more recently, released on London label Fruits de Mer Records, Barrett’s Allsorts; a tribute to the genius of Pink Floyd’s Syd Barret. BBC radio picked it up and have been playing it, as have other UK radio stations. A limited edition vinyl was released and sold out, with copies being snapped up for as much as £265 online.
And now, hot off the press… One Small Step at a Time, a remarkable story of Tony’s mother’s message to him found by chance long after she had died, a much needed message of love and reconciliation in these broken times.
