She Said “Yes” After Playing a Custom-Designed Escape Room Featuring Clues from the Couple’s IRL Romance

Jersey City, NJ (PRUnderground) September 23rd, 2020

Paruzal, the Denver-based, live-hosted, online escape room company announced that they have hosted their first online escape room wedding proposal, as one of their players, Jeff Chen of Jersey City, NJ popped the question to his girlfriend, Sophia Chu, before family and friends at the climax of their group’s adventure game.  And of course she said Yes!

Chen contacted Paruzal Games several months ago and asked them to design a custom escape room that would incorporate elements from the couple’s romantic history.  Paruzal worked with him to include important dates, trips and their favorite coffee shop, all leading up to Chen’s real-life proposal once the room’s final puzzle was solved.

“Game playing has been a big part of our relationship, especially with the pandemic restricting so many traditional dating activities,” said Jeff Chen, who works as a technical program manager for Venmo. “And since outdoor proposals are limited as well, I thought it would be fun and memorable to pop the question at the climax of an escape room adventure. Let me tell you, doing it virtually was just as nerve racking as doing it in real life!”

The escape room featured a number of “Easter eggs” inspired by the couple’s relationship – references to their favorite vacation spot, Hawaii; eating ramen, dancing bachata, and the final puzzle’s solution which had Chen down on one knee, proposing to his girlfriend, Sophie. Even the name of the escape room adventure, “The Java Shop’s Precious Grind”, acronyms to “Jeff and Sophie’s Proposal Game”.

As a bonus, the virtual escape-room gave the couple’s close friends and family, who couldn’t safely get together physically because of the pandemic, a chance to participate in the engagement announcement. And for those who couldn’t play along, Paruzal recorded the game screens for posterity.

“At first, I couldn’t believe the game had so many references to our relationship,” said Sophia Chu, who works as a project manager for Cigna. “But then we solved the final puzzle, which ended with Jeff proposing to me, I realized the whole game had been constructed for this event. I was blown away by it!”

“Custom puzzles, designed for families, couples, and even businesses, open up a whole new exciting dimension of game play,” said James Warner, the CEO of Paruzal Games. “We’re thrilled we could play a part in this unique and romantic proposal and we wish Jeff and Sophie years of puzzle solving happiness together.”
