Phoenix Chapter of Girls in Tech Hosts Launch Event

Chapter kicks off with special screening of the film “She Started It,” which follows five women as they pitch VCs, build teams, and bring products to market

Girls in Tech, an organization focused on the empowerment, entrepreneurship, engagement, and education of women in technology, is launching its Phoenix Chapter with a special screening of the film “She Started It,” at the Irene P. Flinn Theater located in the Arizona Science Center, 600 E. Washington Street, Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday, June 15, from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Parents are encouraged to bring their tweens and teens.
“Girls in Tech is not just for professional women,” said Rebecca Clyde, co-founder of Botco.ai, and Ideas Collide and co-managing director, Girls in Tech. “We exist for anyone with an interest in technology, startups and providing women with a platform for growth. We started the Phoenix chapter to help young women in our community understand and expand their potential as future leaders in technology – from the classroom to the boardroom.”
Through intimate, action-driven storytelling, the film “She Started It,” explores the cultural roots of female underrepresentation in entrepreneurship—including pervasive self-doubt, fear of failure, and risk aversion among young women. It exposes, too, the structural realities women face as they become entrepreneurs, including lack of female role models and investors, and the persistent dearth of venture capital funding made available to women-led companies.
“It’s imperative we show the future workforce what’s possible in the world of science, technology, engineering, and math–fields which are woefully underrepresented by women,” said Melissa Drake, Career and Technical Educator, former engineer and co-managing director, Girls in Tech Phoenix Chapter. “As an educator, I wanted to launch the Phoenix Chapter of Girls in Tech because I’m passionate about helping bright, capable and dedicated women seek fulfillment in careers that pay them their worth and gives them the power and freedom to do their best work.”
