Leaders of Renaissance Ranch, a men’s drug rehabilitation center based in Bluffdale, Utah, know that supportive families play a pivotal role in the addiction recovery process. Through their latest Family Addiction Recovery podcast episode, they are helping family members better support their loved one’s journey to sobriety.

Christine and Rick Dixon, who are co-owners of Renaissance Ranch, moderate the Family Addiction Recovery podcast, which provides free support to family members of those struggling with addiction. Their latest episode centers on Step 4 of the 12-step addiction recovery program, which applies to both the addicted and those who support them. It involves taking stock of one’s strengths and weaknesses, examining relationships, and identifying the various triggers that feed into addiction. Without assessing these negative behavior patterns and their causes, it’s very easy to slip back into old habits in times of stress or pressure.

“I cannot tell you how many times we heard people [in jail and prison] say, ‘I never could stay sober for a long period of time until I did a thorough Step Four,'” said Christine Dixon.

Christine and Rick Dixon purchased Renaissance Ranch in 2014 along with their two sons Preston and Tyson, who are both in long-term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Their goal is to bring the hope and healing they discovered through the recovery process to others through their treatment facilities, which recently won Utah’s “Best of State” award.

While Preston and Tyson oversee the Ranch’s addiction recovery services, Rick and Christine spearhead the family support programs. The substance abuse rehab podcast episode on Step Four is one of six so far and complements a wider array of free family webinars and classes on how to provide support for loved ones in recovery.

Dixon said that going through the 12-Step program is not just for the person suffering from addiction. Rather, it is a vital process for family members, as well. “Everything I learned, I applied to them [my sons]. … When I got to Step Four, where it talked about taking a thorough and honest inventory of yourself, I stepped back. … I have to look at my character defects and weaknesses?”

Dixon continued, “I started to learn about this thing called codependency. … I had so many blind spots that I couldn’t see [things I was doing] that were really wreaking havoc in my marriage and in my relationship with my sons and my other family members.”

In this podcast, the Dixons are joined by Bryan and Jameson Hedin, brothers who went through the recovery process at the Ranch a year apart from each other and who now work at the all-male substance abuse center with locations in both Utah and Idaho. Bryan is the Ranch’s executive director, and Jameson is a licensed social worker in charge of the rehab’s outpatient treatment center. Both are in long-term recovery. The brothers shared their personal stories and talked about how they went through the process of self-examination in Step Four.
