“Prodigal Son” Actress And “Embracing Me” Author, April Hernandez Castillo, Opens Up During Mental Health Awareness Month About Contemplating Suicide

Castillo, who plays a U.S. Marshal in the Fox drama series beginning Tuesday, May 4, says seeking professional help saved her life.

April Hernandez Castillo appears in the Fox drama series “Prodigal Son,” beginning Tuesday, May 4, and throughout the month of May. The two-time author and motivational speaker is also taking a stand during Mental Health Awareness Month, opening up about contemplating suicide and how seeking professional help saved her life.
“I knew my mental health was declining when I grabbed a bottle of pills and sat in my bathroom contemplating suicide, while my daughter was in the next room crying,” Castillo says about her bout with postpartum depression after having her first daughter.
“I had been suffering for quite some time,” she admits. “That same day I picked up the phone and called my therapist.”
The actress, who also appeared on the series “The Following,” “Person of Interest,” “Dexter,” and “New Amsterdam, but is best-known for her starring role as Eva Benitez in the hit film “Freedom Writers,” alongside Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank, recently released her first memoir, “Embracing Me,” which details her journey of forgiveness, resiliency, healing, and moving forward after surviving a relationship riddled with intimate partner violence.
The nationally-known motivational speaker, who released a TEDx talk, “The Gift of TransPARENTcy,” which touched upon motherhood and the perils of postpartum depression, has made a career of being transparent and authentic, and using her voice to help others find theirs.
“Had I not reached out for professional help, God only knows where I would be right now,” Castillo says. “It breaks my heart to think I came so close to ending my life and robbing my daughter of a mother.”
“Embracing Me” was released by IMPACT Publishing, and is dedicated to Castillo’s husband, Jose, and their two daughters, Summer Rose and Lyla.
