CLARINGTON, ON (PRUnderground) August 3rd, 2016
Team Stradale driver Antoine Comeau has won the 2016 Radical 1340 Can-Am Challenge, and is taking home the trophy. Event 2 of the Can-Am Challenge took place this past weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park during the Radical Canada Festival. The event was also Round 3 of the Radical Cup North America Championship.
Antoine’s main competition through the race was Richard Thomas, and the pair of them made an all-out assault on the fastest lap time. Richard made an incredible pass to gain the lead early on, but Antoine stayed with him in second for the majority of the race. With each passing lap, Antoine and Richard traded the fastest lap time back forth. Not only were they continuously pressing and beating the race’s best lap by tenths and hundredths of a second, they were breaking the track record as well. In fact, both Richard and Antoine broke the track record multiple times throughout the race. Late Saturday, with about five laps left to go, Richard Thomas broke down, ceding the lead to Antoine.
Sunday started out fairly quiet, both on and off the track – the calm before a looming storm, apparently, as the weather looked to be bringing rain down right in the midst of the race. Teams were faced with the critical decision of what tires to run with no way to know for sure if the caution was warranted. Ultimately, all but two teams opted for rain tires, with Drew Heffring and Jeff Green being the only one’s brave enough to run slicks. As the track dried, Antoine was just barely able to hold off Richard Thomas and Drew Heffring and carry his lead through the finish line, and onto the top of the podium. Antoine will bring his first place trophy back to Team Stradale’s home in Joliet, Illinois as the very first winner of the Radical Can-Am Challenge.
On another note, Jeff Green and Tony Weir joined in an additional endurance race. Jeff Green was able to earn a second place finish on Sunday in the endurance race. Tony Weir also finished strong in the new Radical SR3 RSX.
Throughout the weekend, Team Stradale drivers were everywhere, providing strong competition in every race they participated in. They made sure that Team Stradale’s presence was known all around the track, and proved once again that Autobahn drivers and competition racing go hand-in-hand. There can be little doubt that Team Stradale stands for quality driving, a competitive spirit, and heck of a lot of fun.
Team Stradale would like to offer a sincere and whole-hearted thank you to all of the teams who have participated in the Radical Cup. The excitement and fierceness of the competition has increased with every round, and has been an incredible series to watch grow. Be sure to check in this fall, when Team Stradale will attempt to string this win together with another as the Radical Cup North America Championship continues at Circuit of the Americas near Austin, Texas, September 23rd through 25th.
