Toronto, Ontario, Canada (PRUnderground) July 15th, 2020
The Stickmans is an adult comedy about a delightfully dysfunctional family. It’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. It’s not motion capture, it’s full character capture.
Brand Dew Media, a Toronto-based media company, launched the series on July 12, 2020, via a Kickstarter campaign to fund Season 1. The show was created, written and directed by Brandon Birch (Looped, Grojband, Clear Red) and features characterizations by Birch and partner Danielle Dewar. The show’s sets, props and characters are a unique blend of real objects, hand-drawn images, and paper cut-outs. Stories are punctuated by an off-beat original score by musician Tim Gully.
A unique technique
Birch donned a green screen suit painted with a stick figure body. He created cardboard heads with distinctive facial features for each character. These animated stick people move like they’re real because they are. They’re 2D, but they grapple with 3D hopes, dreams, fears and flaws.
A creative campaign
Episode one of the web series is now streaming on YouTube. The Kickstarter campaign goal is to raise $90,000 to fund 3 more episodes, with stretch goals to fund a more robust first season. Thoughtful rewards for backers make Stickmans fans part of the show with options to pitch episode premise ideas, chat with their favourite characters, or even have a character named after them.
The Kickstarter campaign is on now, running until September 9th, 2020. Visit the campaign page to back the project. Any amount is welcome. If successful, the season will be shared for free on YouTube. Backers will receive an ad-free digital download of the complete season.
