No matter what you were celebrating earlier, you don’t want your happy night to end with a DUI(Don’t let a DUI affect your everyday life). Getting behind the wheels of a car, truck, motorcycle, or any other automobile after consuming liquor is a serious crime. People who are apprehended for drinking and driving face numerous consequences. One of the most significant and long-lasting outcomes is losing the driver’s license.
Getting convicted for a DUI(alcohol or drugs) in Ontario may disrupt your life immensely. And this disruption may keep on going and going. A DUI conviction may result in a criminal record, penalties, possible time behind bars, and the loss of your driver’s license. All of these penalties cause tribulation, but the license suspension generally disrupts one’s day-to-day life the most.

License Suspensions for DUI Charges

According to Nicholas Charitsis, a 6-times ThreeBestRated® award-winning DUI lawyer of  Charitsis Law, “As per the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario, your licence will be suspended instantly for 90 days under the Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) under the following circumstances:

  • if your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is more than 80 milligrams, the police charge you with Drive over 80 mgs.
  • if you fail or refuse to give a breath, blood, oral fluid or urine sample when asked by the police, they can charge you with refusing a breathalyzer test.
  • if you fail or decline to complete physical coordination tests or submit to a drug evaluation(required by police)
  • Zero Blood-Alcohol Concentration (BAC) for novice and young drivers(Age 21 or under)

The suspension takes effect while you are still at the roadside or the police station. It is an administrative suspension and separates from any criminal charges you may face later. The drivers who receive an ADLS also have to pay a penalty of 180 dollars.

A DUI offence may also hinder the chances of employment, travel, and social interactions for any individual(apart from penalties and higher insurance premiums). Criminal lawyers with experience in DUI cases can accurately assess the situation and advise you regarding the appropriate defences and strategy. Don’t take chances or limit your options and seek advice from an experienced DUI and Criminal Defence lawyer like Nicholas Charitsis.
