Respected Las Vegas personal injury law firm urges people to treat even mild brain injuries seriously in light of link to Alzheimer’s disease.

Las Vegas, NV (PRUnderground) June 8th, 2020

In honor of Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month observed every June, Tingey Injury Law Firm is reminding Nevadans of the link between traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and Alzheimer’s, which, along with other dementias, affects 50 million people worldwide.

For over 50 years, Tingey Injury Law Firm’s accident injury lawyers have been providing legal representation and counsel to people harmed by the negligence of others in the greater-Las Vegas area. They regularly see clients affected by brain injuries resulting from car accidents, slips and falls, sports-related injuries or work accidents.

With a spotlight on Alzheimer’s this month, Tingey attorneys are urging Nevadans to remember the association between head injuries and Alzheimer’s and to get proper evaluation after injury accidents that could affect the brain.

“It’s common for people to walk away from car accidents thinking that they’re fine, only to begin experiencing brain injury symptoms a couple of days or even weeks later,” said firm attorney Bruce Tingey.

Tingey Injury Law Firm’s traumatic brain injury attorneys advise accident victims to seek prompt medical attention, even if they did not hit their head directly.

“A strong jolt to the body or head can cause the brain to bounce around or twist inside of the skull. This can cause the brain to become damaged and experienced chemical changes that affect its function,” said Tingey.

Three decades of research have established a link between moderate and severe traumatic brain injury and an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. One prominent study showed that older adults with a history of moderate traumatic brain injury were 2.3 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than their counterparts who had not experienced the same type of injury. The risk rose to 4.5 for those who had experienced a severe brain injury.

While there is no evidence supporting greater risk for Alzheimer’s from a single mild TBI, some studies show that a series of these injuries can increase the risk for a form of dementia known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury include:

  • Loss of consciousness for a brief period (up to a few minutes)
  • No loss of consciousness but confusion or disorientation
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Moodiness
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Poor memory or concentration
  • Speech problems

Tingey said that untreated traumatic brain injuries can cause a host of problems down the line. “There’s a lot of danger in ignoring a TBI. There may be bleeding or swelling that needs medical attention. Whether it be Alzheimer’s or depression or declining vision and hearing, the risks associated with TBIs can be devastating.”

Along with urging people to be mindful of the association between TBIs and Alzheimer’s, the Tingey team is encouraging people to “go purple”—the color associated with Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month—by wearing purple clothing or choosing a purple background for their social media profile picture.
