Tutor City: Parents Spend Up to $2,000 a Month on Private Tuition, But Results Still Vary

Industry: Education

For students taking multiple subjects or increasing lesson frequency ahead of major exams, total spending can exceed $10,000 per year per child.

As academic pressure intensifies across Singapore’s education system, more families are turning to private home tuition, with some parents spending up to $2,000 per month on one-to-one lessons. However, despite the rising investment, many students are not seeing consistent academic improvement.

Hourly rates for private home tutors in Singapore typically range from $40 to $150 per hour, depending on the tutor’s qualifications and experience. For students taking multiple subjects or increasing lesson frequency ahead of major exams, total spending can exceed $10,000 per year per child.

Yet, higher spending does not always translate into better results.

“We regularly speak to parents who have already invested heavily in private tuition before approaching us,” said a spokesperson from Tutor City. “In fact, more than 60% of parents who approached us had already tried tuition centres before switching to home tuition, which shows that simply send your child to a centre is not always enough.”

Some parents say the outcomes can be inconsistent, even with long-term commitment.

“I was paying close to $1,200 a month to tuition centres for my son’s Math and Science, but his results didn’t improve much,” said Ms Tan Li Wen, a parent of a Secondary 3 student. “The tutor there was qualified, but the lessons didn’t really target his weak areas.”

Another parent, Mr Rajesh Kumar, shared a similar experience after increasing lesson frequency ahead of exams.

“We added more sessions thinking it would help him catch up faster,” he said. “But my son just became more tired, and there wasn’t a clear improvement. It felt like we were doing more, but not getting better results.”

For some families, the issue became clearer over time.

“I thought sending my girl to a nearby centre was enough,” said Ms Cheryl Lim, whose daughter is in Primary 6. “But after a few months, I realised my child needed someone who could adjust the teaching pace and explain concepts differently. It wasn’t about more lessons — it was about the right approach.”

Parents with older children preparing for national exams are also feeling the pressure.

“We spent nearly $10,000 over the year on different tutors for my daughter’s O-Level subjects,” said Mr Daniel Ng, a parent of a Secondary 4 student. “Some helped, but others didn’t make much difference. Looking back, I think we focused too much on getting ‘experienced tutors’ instead of finding the right match.”

According to Tutor City, a growing number of parents are shifting their focus from tuition centres to ensuring better matching between tutor and student, including teaching style, subject expertise, and the ability to address specific learning gaps.

Industry observers note that while private tuition offers flexibility and personalised attention, results depend heavily on tutor suitability and teaching approach, rather than just lesson frequency or cost.

The trend is especially evident during key academic periods such as PSLE, O-Levels, and A-Levels, where last-minute demand for tutors spikes — often leading to rushed decisions and higher spending without guaranteed outcomes.

“Parents are becoming more selective,” the Tutor City spokesperson added. “They’re asking not just ‘how much’ or ‘how often’, but ‘is this tutor actually helping my child improve?’”

As education pressures remain high, more families are recognising that effective tuition is not about increasing hours, but about finding the right tutor who can address the student’s specific needs.
