Intermountain Park City Hospital is welcoming two additional pediatric orthopedic surgeons, John T. Smith, MD, and John A. Heflin, MD, who will provide comprehensive, orthopedic care to children in the community, and further expand the hospital’s pediatric care services for the growing number of families living along the Wasatch Back.

Dr. Smith is an accomplished orthopedic surgeon specializing in pediatric spine deformity and fracture care. He has been extensively involved in patient care, innovation, and research related to spine deformity in children. He continues to perform surgeries at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City and founded the Pediatric Fracture Clinic there.

Dr. Smith was a founding member of the Pediatric Spine Study Group (PSSG), now the largest pediatric spine database in the world. He has been involved in the development of new methods and devices to treat complex spine deformities in children.

Dr. Smith has held multiple national leadership positions with the Scoliosis Research Society and Pediatric Spine Foundation. His current practice and research continue to focus on pediatric spine deformity and fracture care.

“Of all the communities that Drs. Smith and Heflin could choose to establish their new practices, they chose the Wasatch Back. We are incredibly fortunate to have their nationally recognized expertise so close to home. While others will continue to travel from all over the country to seek care from these two surgeons, we have them here in our own backyard,” said Wing Province, MD, chief medical officer at Intermountain Park City Hospital.

Both Drs. Smith and Heflin will see patients in the emergency room at Park City Hospital and at The Orthopedic Partners clinic (formerly the Rosenberg Cooley Metcalf), on the hospital campus. They will perform surgeries at Intermountain Park City Hospital.

Dr. Heflin is a nationally recognized pediatric orthopedic surgeon who specializes in pediatric spine deformity, fracture care, and general pediatric orthopedic conditions.

Dr. Heflin is actively involved in improving operative techniques and developing spinal instrumentation to improve outcomes in children with early onset scoliosis. He has several medical device patents.

Dr. Heflin’s focus has been in the care of pediatric spinal deformity and complex spinal pathology. He has extensive experience in early onset scoliosis, growth friendly surgery, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, as well as neuromuscular, syndromic spinal deformity and spinal trauma.

He is a member of the Pediatric Spine Foundation and Pediatric Spine Study Group. He continues to perform surgeries at Primary Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Heflin received his mechanical engineering degree at Auburn University, and five years later entered medicine. He graduated from Emory University Medical School and then stayed to complete his orthopedic residency. He completed his fellowship at the University of Utah in Pediatric Orthopedics.

Pediatric orthopedic surgery is the latest addition to Intermountain Health Park City Hospital’s growing pediatric services, which include pediatric surgery, an inpatient children’s unit, and pediatric hospitalists, which bring exceptional care closer to home for area families and their children.
