Manufacturers of low-carbon emission vans have been celebrating today, following the announcement that the government’s Plug-in Car Grant – which has just been extended up to 2015 – will now also apply to energy-efficient larger vehicles.

The grant, which has proved hugely popular since its introduction in January last year, entitles consumers buying vehicles which emit less than 75g/km CO2 to as much as £8,000 off the original asking price. Eligible vans must be able to run for a minimum of 60 miles on one charge and be capable of reaching speeds of at least 50mph.

When making the announcement, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport Norman Baker emphasised the potential benefits to business that the new provision should bring. He explained how he and Business Minister Mark Prisk had arrived at the conclusion that the lower purchase cost, on top of the existing advantages of reduced fuel bills and tax allowances, would combine to create a highly attractive package of incentives for companies considering switching to low-carbon vehicles like the new Ford Transit vans. Baker also pointed out that these new vans would be well suited to modern logistical demands, as many urban businesses primarily rely on their vehicles to make frequent, short journeys around the city each day.

The move was greeted with widespread enthusiasm by the motoring industry. Chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Paul Everitt, commented that the introduction of the van grant outlined the UK’s dedication to becoming the world’s leading producer of energy-efficient transport. As well as the environmental benefits, Everitt also highlighted the significant investment in green technology which the country’s automotive industry should now enjoy.

This pledge will come as welcome news to leading automotive manufacturer Ford, whose new Connect Electric Transit van has been leading the way in ultra-low emission vans technology.
