There has been a rise in recent years in the number of people who make a trip to see the Northern Lights. Iceland is a popular destination for this, and it is easy to see why because the island is only a short plane trip from the UK, the facilities for tourists are very good and the natural beauty of the countryside is well worth seeing.

The capital, Reykjavik, is a compact but very interesting city to visit as well. If you book a week long trip to see the Northern Lights through a tour operator such as Explorers Astronomy tours a day’s guided tour of the city is included and this is well worth doing.  Most of the city can be seen on a walking tour as most of the interesting points are within a few miles’ radius, but all the main sights are easily reached by a short coach ride.

The main shopping streets are beautifully clean and well kept with many boutique type shops, there are historic buildings, a statue park, the impressive Lutheran church which towers on a hill over the city and the harbour with the newly built glass sided Harpa concert hall.  There are also plenty of good places to eat. It is well worth spending a day in Reykjavik at the start or end of your trip to see the Northern Lights.
