Set against the backdrop of the great frontier along an infamous stretch of road outside of Nashville, a new book transports readers to 1818 and back again. An adventurous story written by Michael L. Clark, “The Diary of Gus Childers” is proof positive that, when time traveling, the grass is not always greener on the other side. The much anticipated sequel picks up where Clark’s debut book “The Shimmering” left off. In book one, the story’s hero Daniel Lane encounters a shimmering light while on a trail ride in 2018 that transports him to the early 1800s.  Once there he meets a fellow unwitting time traveler named Gus Childers who passed through the shimmering in 1973. In the new book, though happy to have the friendship of Daniel and his wife Emily, Gus grows lonely for his family after a 46-year absence. Bravely, he leaves the nineteenth century to find out what’s become of them. As he goes, his diary is left behind.  Within it lies firsthand knowledge of the danger that awaits Daniel and his wife at the hands of all things unfamiliar.

“On day trips, my family and I loved to travel along the Natchez Trace Parkway. As a rural carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, while I delivered the mail, I became fascinated by how the people in the early 1800s survived along that stretch of road. At the time, I didn’t realize I had a book in me. Little did I know, I had two. This sequel shows the tenacity and fortitude it took for Americans to thrive on the same Middle Tennessee dirt where many of us live today,” the author said.

In celebration of the simple life where a little valley home could bring as much insight as it did challenge, both of Clark’s books are a reminder that the American way of life was hard won. The struggle to stay alive in the frontier before the settlement of Nashville and the development of the Natchez Trail is brought to light through the eyes of a happily married couple in love with the terrain they fight to manage under other worldly circumstances.
